Interview with Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Philm) 2015

I recently got to see Dave Lombardo's latest project Philm, live at Trickshots in Clifton Park, NY, and, damn, they rock! No doubt about it, he's got a solid band of excellent musicians, and they aren't playing thrash, or anything Slayer-ish. Although he played a beat that was the beat to Criminally Insane, dead on. Also it occurred to me that, this is the Eddie Van Halen of Drums, meaning, his style has been emulated so much, his style IS metal drumming, much like Eddie's finger tapping solos etc. have become standard technique. Hearing the flawless organic sound of the triggerless double bass, from the godfather of it all, still is everything Angel of Death advertises.

The wall of sound produced by the trio rivaled that of bands like High on Fire and crashing wave bass thunder reminiscent of Andy Weiss of early Rollins Band and Gone. There was a hint of SST punk in there, Minutemen spazztastic radness, with some AMREP sounding abrasive noise, mixed with plenty of Dave's (what I like to call) "YABBADABBADOOS" drum rolls. You could swear the Flintstones were running about the pit. All this, with vocalist/guitarist Gerry clean singing/screaming what sometimes seemed like maniacal banter, it's hard to put your finger on their "sound." Afterwards, Dave was nice enough to rap with me about Philm, and some other projects, check it out!
